Indoor Percussion & Indoor ColorGuard

Combined Indoor Percussion and Indoor ColorGuard performed together at TJ on March 7, 2026 completing their season on March 29, 2026 winning 3rd place in their new highly competitive class!
For the past two years TJ Indoor Percussion and Indoor ColorGuard have been reintroducing themselves to the KIDA competitive circut.

These extracurricular groups are open to all TJ Students and all 8th graders from TJ feeder Middle Schools who are interested in competitive visual performing arts. No instrument or dance experience required, just a deep interest in learning, movement, and having fun!

Participation fees are determined by the number of students participating, the complexity/prop/instrument needs of the show, and the number of competitions.

   Frederick percussion, color guard groups drum up success in competition

"The Gov. Thomas Johnson High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble was one of 27 student groups to perform in the Keystone Indoor Drill Association percussion and color guard show at Tuscarora High School on Saturday. The annual competition, now in its fifth year, featured percussion and color guard ensembles from across Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, including three from Frederick County, according to John Karos, Tuscarora’s band director and one of the event organizers.
A dual team from Tuscarora and Brunswick high schools, the Western Frederick Percussion Ensemble, also competed in the percussion portion of the event. Color guard teams included Western Frederick and TJ as well as Frederick High School and a separate Brunswick Junior Color Guard.
The event is one of half a dozen competitions hosted by the Keystone Indoor Drill Association, starting in January with a final championship event next month, according to Karos. Though he hoped to see a local group win the championship, his focus for now was the event Saturday, the scores from which will be used to tabulate rankings ahead of the April championships.
